Men's health care close to home

Many men put off seeing a doctor until something is wrong. A regular relationship with a family practice makes it easier to catch problems early and get honest answers to questions you may not want to search online. At Beckett Ridge Family Medicine, we care for men from West Chester Township, Liberty Township, Fairfield and nearby communities.

Preventive care for men

Preventive visits look at your overall health, not just one problem. At a checkup, your provider may:

  • Review your health history, family history and medicines
  • Do a physical exam, including your blood pressure and weight
  • Order lab work as needed, for example to check cholesterol and blood sugar
  • Talk with you about screenings recommended for your age and health history
  • Talk about sleep, stress, alcohol, smoking and activity

Learn more on our annual physicals page. If you already live with a condition like high blood pressure or diabetes, our chronic care keeps it on track.

Low testosterone: signs to talk about

Testosterone levels can drop for many reasons, including other health conditions, certain medicines, weight changes and poor sleep. Symptoms can be vague and overlap with other problems. Signs that may point to low testosterone include:

  • Low sex drive or erection problems
  • Fatigue or low energy
  • Low mood or irritability
  • Loss of muscle mass or strength
  • Less body or facial hair

Having these symptoms does not mean you have low testosterone. Thyroid problems, depression, sleep apnea and other conditions can cause similar symptoms. That is why a careful evaluation matters.

How low testosterone is tested

Low testosterone is checked with a blood test. Because levels change during the day, the blood sample is usually taken in the morning, when levels tend to be highest, as MedlinePlus explains. A single low result is not enough. The test is often repeated to confirm it, and your provider may order other lab work as needed to look for a cause.

Treatment options

Treatment starts with the whole picture. Sometimes improving sleep, losing weight, adjusting a medicine or treating another condition can help your symptoms. If weight is part of the picture, our medical weight loss program can help.

When testing confirms low testosterone and it makes sense for your health, your provider may talk with you about testosterone therapy. It comes in several forms, and your provider will explain which, if any, fits your needs. The FDA approves testosterone products for men who have low testosterone along with a related medical condition, and it urges caution when the only cause is aging. Results differ from person to person, and testosterone therapy is not right for everyone.

Monitoring and possible risks

Testosterone therapy needs ongoing follow-up. Your provider will see you for regular visits and order lab work as needed to check your levels and how your body is responding. Possible risks and side effects include:

  • A rise in red blood cell count
  • Higher blood pressure, which the FDA now includes in product warnings
  • Lower sperm count, which can affect fertility
  • Acne
  • Worsening sleep apnea
  • Questions about heart and prostate health, which your provider will review with you

If you are hoping to have children, tell your provider before starting treatment. Testosterone therapy can lower sperm production, and other options may make more sense.

Step by step

What to expect at your visit

  1. Talk about your symptoms

Your provider asks how you've been feeling, how long it's been going on, and about your sleep, weight, medicines and other health conditions.

  2. A physical exam

Your provider checks your blood pressure and does an exam focused on your concerns.

  3. Morning lab work

If low testosterone is a possibility, you'll have a blood test, usually in the morning. It is often repeated to confirm the result.

  4. Review results and options

Your provider explains your results, possible causes and treatment options, including the benefits and risks of each.

  5. Follow-up and monitoring

If you start treatment, you'll come back for regular visits and lab checks.

Frequently asked questions

Only lab testing can show whether your levels are low, and symptoms like fatigue or low sex drive have many possible causes. Your provider will talk with you about your symptoms, do an exam and order a morning blood test, which is often repeated to confirm the result.

Results vary. Some men notice changes and others do not. Your provider will look for every possible cause of your symptoms and talk with you about what treatment may and may not do for you.

Like any treatment, it has possible risks, including higher blood pressure, a rise in red blood cell count, lower sperm count, acne and worsening sleep apnea. Regular follow-up visits and lab work as needed help your provider watch for these.
