Skin care from your family practice

A new rash, a red and painful spot, or an itch that won't let you sleep can be worrying. Many common skin problems can be checked and treated at your family doctor's office, often without a long wait for a specialist. At Beckett Ridge Family Medicine, we see children and adults with skin concerns and help you understand what is going on and what to do next.

Our office in West Chester Township has served families since 1995, including patients from Liberty Township and Fairfield. Our nurse practitioners, Kim Butts and Taylor Boontjer, both bring emergency care experience, and every provider here sees patients of all ages.

Common skin problems we treat

  • Rashes from allergies, irritation, viruses or other causes.
  • Skin infections, such as cellulitis, a bacterial infection that makes the skin red, swollen, warm and painful, and boils, which are painful, pus-filled bumps.
  • Insect bites and stings that are swollen, very itchy or look infected.
  • Eczema flares with dry, itchy, irritated skin.
  • Acne in teens and adults.
  • Poison ivy and other plant rashes.

Treatment depends on the cause. It may include skin care advice, creams or ointments, medicine by mouth, or antibiotics when an infection needs them. We'll explain how to care for your skin at home and what changes mean you should call back.

When to call us the same day

Some skin problems should be checked quickly. Call us during office hours if you notice:

  • Redness that is spreading or getting bigger
  • A fever or chills along with a red, painful area of skin
  • Red streaks spreading out from a wound, bite or sore
  • Pain that is getting worse quickly
  • A boil or sore that keeps growing, or one on the face
  • A rash with fever, or a rash that is spreading fast

Infections like cellulitis can spread, so early care matters. If you are already being treated for a skin infection and you develop new symptoms, call us right away. When you call, we may offer a same-day sick visit with an available provider.

Call 911 or go to the ER if you have trouble breathing or swelling of your face, lips, tongue or throat after a sting, bite, food or medicine. Also go to the ER if a red, painful area is spreading very fast, you have a high fever and feel very ill, or you are confused or unusually drowsy.

Caring for your skin at home

  • Keep cuts, scrapes and bites clean and covered.
  • Don't squeeze or pop boils or pimples. This can spread infection.
  • After touching poison ivy, wash your skin and clothes as soon as you can.
  • Use gentle, unscented soaps and moisturize often if you have eczema.
  • If you have diabetes, check your feet daily and call us about any sore that is slow to heal. Learn more about our diabetes care.

When you need a dermatologist

We treat many common skin problems in our office. If a rash doesn't improve with treatment, a skin condition needs specialized care, or a mole or spot looks unusual, we'll refer you to a dermatologist and help coordinate your care.

To book a visit for a skin problem, call (513) 860-4600.

Step by step

What to expect at your visit

  1. We hear what happened

We ask when the problem started, how it has changed, whether you have fever or pain and what you have tried at home.

  2. We look closely at your skin

Your provider examines the area and checks for signs of infection, allergy or other causes.

  3. We start treatment

You leave with a treatment plan, home care steps and clear signs that mean you should call back or go to the ER.

  4. We follow up or refer

We check that your skin is healing and refer you to a dermatologist if you need specialized care.
